A group of local investors in the Village of Young are hoping to keep their school from becoming a mothballed eyesore while creating an economic resource.

SSRE Holdings was just one local group that battled to keep McClellan School open but Horizon School Division did close the doors in 2013 due to low enrollment.

Les Saelhof, one of the partners in SSRE Holdings says they now have the 36,000 square foot facility for sale through MLS and McDougall Auction.

"We didn't want to see a building that was in good repair, was the cornerstone of our community boarded up and closed and not maintained properly," Saelhof explained.

They purchased the building from Horizon and are now hoping somebody finds a use.

"We thought there was opportunity for some business, some function that could add to our community," he added.

A number of ideas have been passed around, the facility is definitely multi-purpose. It houses a functioning stage with curtain that a drama group could utilize, there is an industrial arts lab as well as a home-economic room.

Saelhof believes some company could benefit from the purchase.

"Any type of corporate training centre, be it a safety training centre for the mines, we've got four potash mines within 40 miles of our community. Any type of adult learning opportunities could be handled out of that facility, that's really what it's designed for."

The group is willing to hold onto the facility for the right purchaser, they simply want the best for their community of 240 people which does feature a skating rink, a swimming pool, curling rink, golf course plus a hotel and restaurant.

"We would like to see someone else with the time and the energy to do it. We would like to sell it sooner than later but if the right opportunity came along we would be willing to look at whatever type of idea come our way."

The current bid is $155,000, the online bidding closes March 31st.
