Middle Lake seniors had a chance Thursday to learn some tips to make their lives a bit safer and healthier.

The Senior Strong: Knowledge is Power event covered topics such as fall and fraud prevention, senior abuse and winter driving.

“It’s just a really great day for seniors to get information on a number of safety items,” Safe Communities Humboldt and Area executive director Shari Hinz said.

Falls are a leading contributing factor for hospitalizations, and seniors would learn how to know the risks and prevent them, Hinz said.

Alice Kirsch came to learn about fraud prevention.

“Anybody can phone you and you don’t know who’s at the other end, whether it’s legal or not,” she said.

“Sometimes you get phone calls and they sound so real and you think, yeah, well maybe that sounds good, and really it’s a scam.”

Recreation therapist Emma Cawood talked about the hazards of sitting.

The number of hours a person sits every day directly correlates with risk of heart disease, she said. Being hunched over is also bad for the digestive system.

A person should try to get up and move around at least every hour. Every half hour is better.

“You just get the blood flowing again, you get those major muscles in the legs working, it’s good for your posture. It’s just good for you.”

More Senior Strong events are planned for Watson, Bruno and Humboldt.
