The current minimum wage rate in Saskatchewan is $10.20, and will soon increase to $10.50.

Minimum wage rates are figured out using changes in the Consumer Price Index explained Don Morgan, Minister of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety.

"Based on the increase and consumer price index and the average hourly wage for workers in Saskatchewan so what we do is in the spring do a review of the CPI changes and hourly wages and then announce it so that the increase takes place six months in the future so it gives employers and workers a chance to adjust."

Currently, Alberta and Saskatchewan are tied for having the lowest minimum wage rates, at $10.20 per hour.

Morgan added this change in minimum wage only makes sense.

"Naturally we are always aware of and watch what takes place in other jurisdictions but we amended our legislation so that there's an automatic adjustment to keep up with the cost of living and we think that's fair and reasonable and that keeps our workplace and competitive. Naturally we're gonna look and see what's happening."

This change will be effective October 1,2015.
