Premier Scott Moe took to social media on December 23 to provide a rationale on the government’s current approach to rising COVID numbers. Moe is not ruling out additional measures during the Christmas season if the situation worsens. He acknowledged that while the case count was rising, the lower number of hospitalizations was partially behind the “wait and see” stance.

“I can say we are tracking the situation very closely, and we have not ruled out additional measures around large gathering sizes potentially being introduced in the next week,” said the Premier.

He’s also counting on Omicron variant cases remaining milder in terms of symptoms, he noted, based on evidence seen from around the world. With hospitalization levels at their lowest since August, Moe stated he was not willing to impose further disruption on business and activities.

Moe cited the list of actions the government and health system is recommending in mitigating the impact of what appears to be yet another wave fuelled by a new variant.

“First, go get your booster shot,” Moe appealed. “A booster shot may not prevent you from contracting the Omicron variant, but it should keep you from getting very sick. In fact, you may have no symptoms at all.”

Moe also advised picking up a box of rapid test kits and self-test from time to time. Rapid test kits are available at various outlets in communities throughout the province. Unfortunately, the test kits are in high demand and supply is limited. Some outlets in Humboldt are awaiting restocking.
