In the works for several months, and now the time is nearly here.

Plenty of work has gone into crafting together the 4A boys provincial volleyball championship, which will be hosted in Humboldt on Friday and Saturday.

Coach David Millette says they are beyond amazed at the community support received.

"We spent the past couple talking to various businesses and they have just been excellent in support, whether it is donating coupons, food, and money," he said. "The community is really rallying behind us here, and it makes it a lot easier on the organizing committee."

An estimated 150 athletes will be competing over the two days, as the Mohawks host the nine other top teams in 4A play to battle it out for provincial supremacy.

Two gyms are required for the provincial championship to be hosted, so the event will be split into two schools, says Millette.

"We have the opening ceremonies starting at 10:45am at HCI. All the games begin at 12:00pm, and we have a full court at HCI, and another full court at the public school."

The Mohawks successful bid to host the provincial championship gave them an automatic berth into provincials, which is their first appearance since 2010.

Humboldt wanted to ensure they took the proper path to their spot in the tournament by winning their way in, which was exactly what they did by winning regionals on November 18.

Millette says that the Mohawks have put in plenty of time and effort into aligning themselves with the best chance possible to come out with the provincial crown.

"They're extremely dedicated, whether it be a lot of 7:00am practices, or whatever it may be, they are motivated," he noted. "They just need to go out there and trust themselves and trust their teammates."

In 2010, the Mohawks placed fourth at provincials, and have only one medal to show in their history in boys volleyball.

That was a bronze medal back in 1996.

The team hopes that they can build off the school's historic first boys soccer provincial championship in October and double down with a volleyball title.

Other teams competing on the weekend will be Biggar, Melville, Tisdale, La Loche, Melfort, Shaunavon, Moose Jaw Vanier, Sturgis, and Saskatoon Christian.
