Four people are dead and many others are injured after a school shooting in La Loche, a community seven hours north of Humboldt.

Shortly after 1:00pm yesterday, La Loche RCMP received a complaint of a person using a firearm in the community.

Police arrived at the La Loche Community School and immediately began searching for a suspect. At 1:47pm, one male was taken into custody outside the school and a firearm was secured.

"A number of people have been injured. We do not have information about the type or extent of their injuries," stated Chief Superintendent Maureen Levy with the Saskatchewan RCMP at a Friday night press conference.

Levy added that there is no longer a risk to public safety.

"This is truly a tragedy for the families, the community of La Loche and the citizens of Saskatchewan. Our hearts and prayers are with all those affected. As part of your community, we mourn you," she continued.

Investigators continue to monitor the scene.

A candlelight vigil was held on Friday night outside the school by community members.

Many have expressed their support for the town, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who stated "the country's heart is breaking for the people of La Loche."

Premier Brad Wall added through his Facebook page his support.

"Words cannot express my shock and sorrow at the horrific events today in La Loche. My thoughts and prayers are with all the victims, their families and friends and all the people of the community."

Canadian tennis star Milos Raonic expressed his support for La Loche by dedicating his third round win at the Australian Open to the community.

"It was a difficult day back home," he said. "There was a shooting in a high school in a small town. I give my thoughts to that community, the families, the students and the school affected."

"We wish you all the best. This win was for that community and a speedy recovery. All of Canada and the world is behind you."
