Thanks to Humboldt Home Hardware and Trees Canada almost 70 new fruit trees will grow prosperously in the city.

Home Hardware has been involved with tree planting initiatives since the mid 1990's and this is year two of the project benefiting Humboldt.

Home Hardware General Manager Dean Possberg explains more about how the Water Tower land became the focal point.

"We really got involved with the program about two years ago when we started planting trees at Water Ridge Park. I just submitted an application to Home Hardware head office and put in a good story and they approved my application and we did it again this year with the Water Tower so it all worked out."

The planting of apple, crab apple, Saskatoon berry and sour cherry bushes took place Wednesday which coincidentally was National Tree Day.

Keith Dodge was in the city of behalf of the organization, he says it's great to see more trees growing even when he isn't involved.

"Humboldt is a great community, there is lots going on around here. It's nice to see they're aren't just planting trees from Trees Canada, I see all around the town they are planting different groups of trees different places so obviously it's in their blood to do that kind of thing."

In the first year Humboldt Home Hardware got involved they planted trees at Water Ridge. The land next to the Water Tower got most of this year's crop but the Elizabeth Retirement grounds will receive some as will Water Ridge again.

Possberg said the Water Tower Committee, whom he has a connection with was a worthy recipient following their recent renovations.

"I know when we planted trees at Water Ridge Park last year, my uncle Norman Duerr said hey, what about the Water Tower? I said I will put in an application, we'll get some trees for the Water Tower."

The 65 trees they received are valued at $4,500. Overall, in 24 years Home Hardware has contributed over 21,000 trees valued at over $1,000,000 across the nation.

Dodge was assisted by the New Westminster Scouts Troop Wednesday afternoon during the planting.
