Voters head to the polls on Thursday to elect a new Member of the Legislative Assembly for the Melfort constituency.

A by-election is set to take place following five days of advance voting, which saw 1,269 people already cast their ballot.

Tim Kydd with Elections Saskatchewan is encouraging those eligible to vote to do so.

"It's an opportunity voters have to have their say in who is going to be their elected representative. It's an opportunity to vote and come out and have your say and your voice heard."

Polls will be open from 9:00am to 8:00pm in each community in the riding, which includes Lake Lenore, St. Brieux, Naicam, Watson, Spalding, Englefeld, St. Gregor, LeRoy, and Quill Lake, among others.

If you are unsure where to vote, you can enter your address on the Elections Saskatchewan website.

Three candidates will appear on the ballot.

  • Todd Goudy - Sask Party
  • Lorne Schroeder - New Democrats
  • Shawn Setyo - Green Party

The Saskatchewan Party currently holds the seat, which was occupied by Kevin Phillips before he passed away last year.

Elections Saskatchewan says there are 12,181 registered voters in the riding.
