The Humboldt Regional Newcomer Centre held their annual general meeting on Wednesday afternoon.

The organization, that's been in operation since 2010 is progressing forward with their share of challenges.

Overall it was a positive year highlighted by their first annual Community Recognition Awards Gala.

"Working with the employers again has been another highlight for us but I think as most people who came to it would say the probable highlight of our year was our first awards gala," beamed Executive Director Janine Hart. "It certainly showcased the mosaic that we have through out our region."

Culture Days and working with the Downtown Improvement District were other keys to 2016.

Moving forward the board is in the final stages of finalizing a three year strategic plan.

"It's really going to help us focus our efforts and our thoughts and our plans over the coming years," explained board chair Kelvin Fisher. "We have more demands than what we can meet in terms of the funding available and we're going to do our best to try and meet all of them but we want to make sure what we're doing is effective."

Hart adds they will continue to make transitions to the region easier for everyone as they have seen more cross-provincial border immigration.

"We're still seeing a lot of new temporary foreign workers coming through our doors. Predominantly from other provinces so not directly from overseas as we have seen previously. Mainly Alberta, that's the province we are seeing new people come in from and families, we've seen a lot of family reunification."

Financially the organization is sitting with $165,000 in assets, that's down from 2015's number of just under $200,000.

The group came into the AGM with five board members, one more joined giving them six, that's Pascal Forest.

You can hear more from both Hart and Fisher in their interview with Bolt FM's Clark Stork and the Humboldt Journal's Becky Zimmer.
