The federal and provincial governments recently announced funding for communities and municipalities to improve their water systems; Nokomis was on the list.

They will see $851,000 in funding that will replace the line essentially across the town.

"It's a huge, huge investment into the community, one that was going to take us approximately 10 to 15 years to accomplish" beamed Mayor David Mark. "This allows us to leap ahead and move on to newer projects so it's exciting."

The original water line installed in the late 1930's by CN Rail is currently serving the community but Mark says it's days are numbered.

"There's been minor repairs in the past and in 2015 we had a major breach where we lost water supply and it cost the community about $170,000 to repair so we've known for a while and have been anticipating renewing the line."

Council decided to use savings and a loan from their local Credit Union to cover the remaining $425,000.

Work is expected to begin in July.
