Don't be alarmed if the police stop you for using the crosswalk or wearing your bike helmet.

The positive ticketing campaign is back with Safe Communities Humboldt and Area and emergency services personnel in the city.

Residents 'caught' in the act of being safe could receive a ticket that will be redeemable for a prize from various sponsors.

"It's a really positive initiative within the community. It gives our emergency services personnel an opportunity to interact with our youth and the public," said Safe Communities Humboldt and Area Executive Director Shari Hinz. "Sometimes the RCMP hands out tickets not so positive in nature, so it is a great opportunity for them to recognize safe behaviour."

This is the fourth year that the organization has been rewarding proper safety.

Hinz says that certainly, they do notice an uptick in safe measures.

"When we first roll it out, sometimes there is some obvious increase in helmets and those types of things," she explained. "We want to promote safety year round. It's nice to recognize it when we have the program ongoing, but it is definitely something we encourage regardless of the time of year."

Recipients of a ticket can redeem it for one of many prizes:

  • leisure pass, mini golf pass, tumbler with food or treat coupon, USB charger, ear buds, fleece blanket, foldable water bottle, flashlight/keychain, colouring book, bracelets or sunglasses.

Hinz added that everyone who gets a ticket and picks up their prize could win something even bigger.

"This year we are adding a grand prize draw with the campaign. Anybody who redeems a ticket gets their name into one large prize draw at the end of the year."

The campaign runs from May 15 to September 15. Tickets are redeemable at City Hall or the main desk at the Uniplex.
