For eight years, Safe Communities Humboldt and Area has been helping teach agriculture and household safety.

PotashCorp Lanigan is once again stepping up to help children in the Humboldt area be more aware about safety on the farm and at home.

For the sixth year, PCS has chipped in with a donation to Safe Communities Humboldt and Area for the Progressive Agriculture Safety Day.

Another $4,000 was contributed to the program, which pushes the six year total to over $20,000. Having community support is quite exciting, says Safe Communities Executive Director, Shari Hinz.

"It's awesome. In order to be able to offer the programming that we do, to have an organization like PotashCorp Lanigan step up and contribute towards our Progressive Agriculture Safety Day, it's a great initiative and a great donation on their part."

Hinz says that the funds are crucial for the day.

"It helps to cover the costs associated with offering the program," she explained. "This year, we are hosting it out at Lake Lenore School, so we've got some of our rural schools attending this year - Lake Lenore, Annaheim, Three Lakes and Bruno."

Last year, students in Humboldt were able to take in the safety lessons.

The program is offered to students in Grades 1 through 5, which Hinz believes is a good time to instill safety knowledge in kids.

She added that they learned of a situation where that knowledge has come into play.

"We had some students who attended the fire safety component, and then a few years later they were in a situation where they had to evacuate themselves and family members from a home that was on fire," she noted.

"Those kind of messages that they can remember something that they learned at a day like that and apply it to situations they may encounter later on, that's pretty important stuff."

This is the eighth year that Safe Communities has offered the safety day. It will take place on Wednesday, October 5.
