It is the hide and seek game with young kids, making sure they don't consume anything that can harm them.

This week is being dubbed as Poison Prevention Week - an opportunity for parents and people in general to learn more about preventing poison in children or themselves.

Safe Communities Humboldt and Area is getting in on the awareness, says Executive Director Shari Hinz.

"We are having a presentation geared towards parents and caregivers of children zero to six years of age," she explained. "It's on how to prevent poisoning in children. Definitely some great information for families to attend to receive."

The information session will take place at the St. Augustine School Library on Thursday, beginning at 7:00pm.

Hinz says that those in attendance will receive information regarding the risks of keeping common household items in the open.

"The week is to increase awareness around poison prevention and to make sure families are aware of the dangers of things like medication, cleaners, plants, any types of items containing toxic substances."

She added that case numbers have gone up in terms of poisoning, which is concerning.

"We've seen some of the rates of calls increase in the last couple of years. It's definitely an area of concern where it is always good to provide additional information," said Hinz. "By having this seminar open to the public, it gives people an opportunity to get information on how to prevent those types of things from happening in their home."

Among the topics that will be discussed is ensuring that parents are keeping things out of reach of their children, even if they assume it is in a safe spot.

"Having medications in locked cabinets, up high and out of reach from children. Making sure cleaners and chemicals are out of reach and again, up high. Things like laundry pods are things that we see an increase in cases surrounding that."

Safe Communities is hosting the seminar along with Pharmasave and the Saskatchewan Prevention Institute.
