Safe Communities Humboldt and Area is continuing to help parents with car seat safety.

On Saturday, they are holding a car seat clinic from 10:00am to 2:00pm at Discovery Ford.

"We will have technicians on hand. Parents can bring down their seats to be inspected free of charge," Executive Director Shari Hinz said.

The most recent statistics available from SGI date back to 2011, according to Hinz.

"On average, there is about 105 children age seven years or younger that are injured while in a vehicle," she explained. "Six of those injuries are due to the child not having a restraining device."

Car seat laws changed in 2014, to make it mandatory that children under the age of seven be properly restrained in vehicles.

"In addition, 59 of the injured children were belted by a seatbelt that have been inappropriate for the child."

The seatbelts are more prevalent in terms of safety, due to some vehicles having different set-ups from others.

"There can be some challenges with respect to having those car seats properly installed, depending on the type of vehicle you have," Hinz noted. "We have seen at some of our clinics now, certain types of vehicles have really posed a challenge for parents to get those seats installed properly."

The clinic will be held during the same time period as a fundraising test drive event. From 10:00am until 4:00pm, $20 will be donated to Humboldt Co-operative Daycare for every test drive of a Ford vehicle.
