August 20-26 is Humboldt Pride Week.

Over the noon hour on Monday a rainbow flag was raised outside city hall.

PFLAG member Andrew Hartman explains what this means for the community.

"It really shows how inclusive it can be in a rural setting. Sometimes we'll have that stigma that rural settings can't be that inclusive. But when we have things like the Mayor coming out to celebrate it, we have all these different people coming out to celebrate it. People of LGBT are everywhere and we want to find that support and raise that awareness that there are supports in the community and that there is a sense of pride here."

Guest speakers at the ceremony today included Hartman, Kevin Garringer, Brenda Curtis, and Mayor Rob Muench.

Hartman tells us how an event like this helps raise awareness and increase support all over.

"The Saskatchewan Pride Network out of Moose Jaw help coordinate this. Not only does it happen in Humboldt, there are other agencies that are helping and connecting people to resources to help educate them and help people understand. If they are going through something or wanting to learn more, there are those resources available to them."

As an active PFLAG Humboldt member, Hartman gives us some more information on their organization.

"We've been around for a few years. we are a non-profit community group, we work to raise awareness to provide support and educate individuals within the community over people who fit under the big LGBT umbrella."

Humboldt Pride Week got underway on August 20 and wraps up on Saturday with a ceremony at the Westminster United Church.
