With the cold Saskatchewan winter comes dangers on the roads.

That's why the Humboldt and Lanigan RCMP are urging the public to be prepared before and during travel in the coldest points of the winter season.

Different methods to stay safe before hitting the road is to allow your vehicle to warm up and clean the vehicle of any snow or ice that may affect your vision or even others vision. An emergency kit in the vehicle could also help keep you alive if stranded on the side of the road. The kit should include winter wear, shovel, booster cables, first aid kit, paper maps, and phone charger.

If one is to get stranded on the side of the road they must turn on their four-way flashers so other drivers can see if a person is in distress. Make sure to stay with the vehicle while calling family, friends, or a tow truck to help you out of the cold.

"We just don't want people getting stranded with no help in mind and make sure you take that few minutes before you leave to walk around your vehicle, make sure you have the appropriate clothing, and that you have a full tank of fuel," said Constable Geoff Applegate with the Humboldt and Lanigan RCMP.

Even in the winter, the weather can go from one extreme to the next and road conditions can change. To decide whether or not to travel you can visit the Highway Hotline here.
