Reading is a key skill acquired in school that people continuously use throughout their lives.

At the division's headquarters, four new administrators with the Horizon School Division met with the literacy team to learn how teachers assess the reading of students.

Horizon School Division went over the two tools used in class to evaluate the reading of students. The first being the Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment (F&P) which is for measuring reading levels for grade 1-8 students. While the second is known as Ontario Comprehension Assessment (OCA), used to help students, in grades 9-12, understand and strengthen their reading.

"The major role that administrators have in schools is the supervisory responsibilities of teachers and staff. If they are going to be supervising, they are going to be responsible for what's happening and supporting teachers in their growth then they need to know what it is and how it is they (teachers) are assessing students," said Kevin Garinger, Director of Education for Horizon School Division.

The meeting with Horizon School Division staff and the literacy team takes place every year.
