The Humboldt and Area Refugee Coalition is a group dedicated to bringing and supporting a refugee family in the City of Humboldt.

Since November, the group has held meetings and fundraisers to work towards their goal of $30,000.

Media spokesperson for the coalition, Chelsea Nadiger, says that before a family can move to Humboldt, the government needs to ensure they can be supported.

"We have to be able to prove we can support the family for six months," she noted. "Right now, we're just trying to raise the money and get some in kind donations going so that when we have our family we are ready to go."

In addition to monetary donations, they are also in need of everyday items within the house.

"We're looking for household items. Kitchen things, bed sheets, beds. If people have stuff they're looking to give away. Even things like hygiene products, things like that, that we can collect, if people can give, we're more than willing to take it."

A benefit concert was held in January in support of the coalition. They also had an Easter cupcake sale to raise funds, with more ideas in the works, including an event in June in line with World Refugee Day.

To date, they have raised $6,000 of the $30,000 goal to support a family.

While they appreciate all forms of donations, they are also looking for volunteers, according to Nadiger.

"We are looking for people willing to act as transportation, people willing to set-up the house, people that are willing to help take our newcomer families around and show them things and act as a support system when they're here."

They are currently looking for a larger location to hold donations. Until then, if you have items to donate, they can be dropped off at the Humboldt Regional Newcomer Centre.

More information about donations and volunteering can be obtained through their Facebook page.
