One of the the hardest hit areas of the 2017 provincial budget was library funding and much like the STC axing, it's not sitting well with users.

Every regional library including Humboldt's Reid-Thompson is seeing cuts of 58 percent.

Leslie Richards is the organizer of the movement Drop Everything and Read(DEAR). She is being blunt regarding the future of our libraries.

"All the libraries outside Regina and Saskatoon, they are going to be seeing severe cuts to their budget with programming. It's going to be very possible that a lot of them will have to reduce their hours or close their doors. There will be absolutely no money for new materials, electronic or traditional."

She adds that that libraries go far beyond a brick and mortar building including their HOOPLA program.

"Which has streaming for music, books, audio books, movies, also our Flipster app which is my personal favourite, I frequently use it. You can log in and the library has a subscription to dozens of magazines and you can just them and as soon as you'r d one it deletes them automatically."

The library also has sources for people that are home bound where that can order books online and have them delivered. Richards believes all those amenities are likely gone.

DEAR is spearheading a provincial wide campaign to hopefully save the cuts, a rally will be held in Humboldt's Civic Park from 11am-1pm on Friday. At 12pm they ask every drop everything and read for 15 minutes.

We will be there and provide coverage of the local event.
