Another new Member of the Legislative Assembly will soon be on the way in Regina.

Rose Valley born MLA Kevin Doherty has announced that he is leaving politics to pursue opportunities in the private sector.

"I want to thank all of my caucus colleagues that I have served with over the past six years, including former Premier Wall and our new Premier Scott Moe," Doherty said in a statement. "Even though I am leaving political life, I will continue to be a strong supporter of Premier Moe and our Saskatchewan Party government."

Doherty was first elected in 2011, serving Regina Northeast, and was re-elected in 2016.

His cabinet portfolios have included Parks, Culture, and Sport, Finance, and Advanced Education.

In October, Doherty announced he was resigning from cabinet due to family matters.

His resignation will be official on March 12, with a by-election to be called within six months.
