Neighbouring RMs will have to pay up to continue using the Town of Wynyard’s recycling facility.

The town has moved to a multi-material curbside pickup program, which means there’s no need for a drop-off point for residents’ cardboard, paper, tin cans and glass, mayor Albert Boylak said.

Rural residents have been using that drop-off, but keeping it open would mean the town would be paying for the RMs’ recycling programs, he said.

The town is inviting the RMs of Big Quill and Elfros to join the recycling program with a specific drop-off point that would cost each resident an estimated $5 per month, he said.

Were the RMs to decline, they would have to figure out their own way of recycling, he said.

He has heard from ratepayers from those RMs and the RM of Emerald who support the idea, he said.

“I just keep telling them, talk to your RMs and your Reeves and let them know how important this is to you/ it’s ultimately up to the councils to decide if they want to join this program.
