As overnight temperatures start to drop we can't help to begin to think about the season of Winter.

Safe Communities Humboldt and Area is also thinking about the colder weather and the newcomers to the region so they are helping them out again this year as Executive Director Tracey Shewciw explains.

"We are doing our fourth annual Winter preparedness clinics as well as a Winter clothing, boot, accessory and tool drive. The tool and clothing drive leads up to the two Winter preparedness clinics that we're holding."

Those two events will teach newcomers and seasoned Saskatchewan Winter veterans about the importance of heating your home properly, the effects of frost bite and hypothermia plus other detriments of the long cold season. They are scheduled for October 16th and 23rd.

Shewciw tells us what they are looking for when it comes to donations.

"We're looking for clean, good quality clothing that will fit men, women, children, youth, pretty much everybody. If you've got mitts, scarves, toques, blankets, shovels, anything like that laying around that you're not using."

Donations will be accepted until October 14th, they can be taken to the Humboldt Regional Newcomer Centre.

Shewciw says a Saskatchewan Winter can take it's toll on a new family.

"We get new people from around the world coming to us off the plane in cold temperatures and they are just not dressed properly. It's not just children, we all have stuff laying around that we aren't using."

Anything that is left over after the clinics will be donated to PARTNERS Family Services.

Safe Communities has a number of other organizations involved in these initiatives including SaskEnergy, the Humboldt Fire Department, Humboldt and District Ambulance Service and Saskatchewan Government Insurance.
