For the last three years Safe Communities Humboldt and Area has partnered with BHP Billiton for a bike rodeo during the Summer Sizzler.

This year they have expanded beyond bicycle safety to make it more family friendly as Executive Director Shari Hinz explains.

"This year we're adding an all-terrain vehicle safety component, we have Ride Rite ATV and UTV Safety Training joining us. Smokey the Bear will be there from Saskatchewan Wildlife Management. SGI is bringing their 'One Simple Decision' adult driving simulator this year. It's something for the adults to take part in as well, there's a couple of courses you can do, an impaired driver course as well a distracted driver course."

Hinz says these are mainstream topics right now so that's an important reason why they wanted to incorporate these features plus it makes the event more family orientated.

"By bringing in the ATV component, there's been a number of incidents in the past year in the province and western Canada surrounding ATV crashes so we wanted to bring that component in, it's definitely something we wanted to focus on. Just having some expanded content in regards to the water safety and wildfire aspect."

The event if free of charge and runs Saturday at the Humboldt Curling Rink. BHP will provide 200 free helmets to kids coming to take part.

Hinz says another local business has stepped up for people that can't have a bike with them.

"We're very fortunate Universal Sports is donating some bikes to be used for the rodeo so if families come in and they aren't bringing a bike with them they can definitely borrow one of the bikes that we will have on hand as well."

Returning again this year are the SGI Safety Squad and Saskatchewan Child Find ID Clinic Passport Booth, the Humboldt Fire Department's Interactive Fire Safety Display and Big Brothers Big Sisters will also be involved.
