Safe Communities Humboldt and Area is asking for some extra cash from the city as it goes through some growing pains.

Executive director Shari Hinz came before Humboldt city council Monday night to request an increase to $15,000 in annual funding for three years, from $10,000.

The Safe Communities umbrella organization, Parachute Canada, in 2015 stopped providing tax receipts for personal donations in the form of memberships, she told Bolt FM in an interview. They also no longer provide liability insurance.

"So as a result of those things we've investigated charitable registration status for ourselves so we can try and create opportunities for increased membership donations by individuals, and also with charitable registration comes different financial reporting requirements and associated costs with that."

The $1,200 to $1,300 that Safe Communities Humboldt and Area now must pay for insurance takes away from programs such as the car seat and winter preparedness clinics, she said.

Mayor Rob Muench said council appreciates the work the group does in the city and will look at the pros and cons in its budget deliberations.

"Right now we've asked them about regional contributions - other communities that are served as well. There are certain ones that do and certain ones that don't contribute so we've asked them to go out and see if there are other communities that maybe want to help as well."
