There will be an extra spring in the step of kids on Thursday, as classes return for the 2016-17 school year.

With that, posted school zone speed limits will once again be reinforced.

CAA Saskatchewan continues to promote school safety by sponsoring patrollers to help kids cross the road.

However, not all crosswalks are marked. That doesn't mean you shouldn't be stopping and allowing kids to get to or from school in a safe manner.

"We know for some youngsters, it might be their first experience, so please slow down and give them proper time to cross the street safely," says Director of Communications, Christine Niemczyk.

In Humboldt, school zones are in effect from 8:00am to 5:00pm during school days, according to Community Development Coordinator, Colby McClelland.

"The speed limit is 30 kilometres per hour in designated school zones," he noted. "Residents are also reminded that increased traffic in these areas may cause congestion at peak times, such as drop off and pick-up

Safety does go both ways, for motorists and for the students. Niemczyk says there are some tips you can give your kids to ensure their well-being.

"Never run out into traffic, or between parked cars, buses or buildings. Stay focused, pay attention and learn to walk and not run across the street or a busy intersection," she explained. "At an intersection where there is lights, learn to cross when it is appropriate and when it is not."

School buses are a popular mode of transportation during the school year and McClelland says that there are laws regarding that, as well.

"Every driver approaching a school bus from either direction that has a red signal light flashing, must stop 20 metres away and only proceed once the lights are stopped."
