As we say goodbye to the last long weekend of summer, more vehicles will be on the roads rushing to get to work or other activities.

With that, SGI is reminding motorists to slow down in school zones and ensure the safety of not only yourself, but the children who returned to school on September 1.

"Slow down, make sure you're very cautious in a school zone. Stay alert, constantly scan the road ahead for any hazards - maybe a child that steps out into your path," says SGI Media Relations Manager, Kelley Brinkworth

Being wary as kids pile off of school buses is important as well.

"Be cautious when you're approaching or maneuvering around school buses. Especially in school bus loading zones. Make sure you obey the signs and signals and watch for children who maybe don't know the rules of crossing the street."

Those caught speeding in school zones are fined a base amount of $140, which increases by two dollars for every kilometre over the posted speed limit.

"You also lose three points under SGI's safe driver recognition program, and just depending where you sit on the safety rating scale, that could mean you lose some of your insurance discount," added Brinkworth.

In Humboldt, posted school zone speed limits are 30 kilometres per hour between 8:00am and 5:00pm.

Last year, there were 40 collisions in school zones across the province, with 15 people being injured.
