Saskatchewan's New Democrats have chosen their leader for the next general election.

Ryan Meili received 55% of the vote on Saturday, as NDP supporters backed the family physician in his third time running for the leadership role.

Meili used the wintry scene outside as backing for part of his victory speech.

"It's blowing pretty hard out there today, and I think that might be the winds of change."

Meili continued, saying that the NDP is ready to guide that change.

"People of Saskatchewan are ready for change, and New Democrats are ready to lead. We are a party of leaders," he stated. "We're also a party of listeners. We're going to be out there talking to everyone we can and hear what's on everyone's minds."

Meili previously ran for the leadership spot in 2009 and 2013, falling to Dwain Lingenfelter and most recently, Cam Broten.

He was up against former interim leader Trent Wotherspoon.
