The Humboldt Golf Club was home to some high-level cross country skiing over the weekend.

The Carlton Trail Ski Club, along with the Humboldt Golf Club held the Saskatchewan Cup Cross-Country Ski race on Sunday, January 13th.

Around 85 racers from all over the province took part in 14 different races in the event that's been running nearly 20 years.

"The racing community is not huge, we have about 150 registered skiers in the province. Everybody alomost knows everybody, and there's a lot of families involved.  That's one of the advantages of cross-country skiing is it's a wonderful family activity and every age group can participate. It's a great showcase of racing too. It's an opportunity for the people of Humboldt to come out and see what ski racing is all about. As you can see, especially when we get into the older age groups, we have a lot of speed in these racers. They are clipping around the course at some very good speeds," said race organizer Dave Martinuk.

The race also featured a side event of five sit-skiers from the para-nordic team including Paralympian medalist Collette Bourgonje.

"January 13th and a day like this in Saskatchewan is pristine conditions. They've worked really hard on this race course,  so we're really grateful for the organizers and volunteers that have put many hours into this race.

Collette now focuses her time on coaching and finding athletes.

"I started in '92 and I've done seven Paralympics, the last one being Sochi. Now I'm coaching and that's way harder than being an athlete actually, so we're looking to find athletes with different disability levels, it's exciting. I've had amazing, amazing opportunities through sport and I want to pass that on to others."

The conditions set the scene for a perfect day of racing in Humboldt.
