Although some extra power use was noted province-wide over this past cold spell, no records were broken in terms of power usage in Saskatchewan.

Jordan Jackle, a representative with SaskPower said that while power consumption was a bit higher than usual, it did not overly push boundaries.

"The last time we saw a record broken was December 29th, 2017, and it was during another frigid cold spell. While we did not surpass our previous high-mark despite the temperatures, the usage was still higher due to the winter months. Temperature control can account for up to 22% of residential power consumption."

Jackle also noted the many factors to how power consumption can jump within colder months.

"In the winter, there is reduced daylight hours, plugging in our cars, and furnaces are on almost continuously. Because of this, we more than likely see the record set in the winter months every year.

SaskPower suggests dropping your thermostat while you are away from home throughout the day, plugging in your vehicle only a few hours before use, and switching to LED lighting throughout your home, as ways to save on power usage.
