Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation(SCIC) is reminding producers they are covered for crop damage as a result of the recent weather conditions.

President and CEO Shawn Jaques says producers can receive compensation for both yield and quality loss as a result of the rain, snow and wind if they can get back out and get their crop harvested.

Here in the Humboldt area Jaques says the crops have been beaten up.

"With respect to the Humboldt and Melfort area, that is a wetter part of our province. Unfortunately those producers did see more snow than other parts of the province in addition to a significant amount of rain so it's creating all kinds of challenges. What we're hearing from our producers is a lot of the crop that was standing is now flat on the ground."

Around 80 percent of the crop in Saskatchewan has been combined, and Jaques says that equates to around 70 million acres of crop still yet to be harvested.

"We're going to need several days if not maybe a week or more of good weather just to get back in the field so certainly producers are concerned," he added. "That's why we've been in the media trying to advise producers to call your local office to discuss options that are available."

Those who are unable to harvest this fall can ask for an extension of their coverage through the SCIC programs.

"The date producers need to keep in mind is that November 15th deadline," Jacques explained. "Crop Insurance does cover for quality and quantity loss so if you think you have a claim you contact your local Crop Insurance office. In the event you can't get your harvest complete or that crop is going to stay out also November 15th is the deadline to register an extension of insurance."

Jaques was still being optimistic however, he pointed to the year 2009 when the same type of weather hit the province but a warm up in November allowed some late finishes for many operations.
