Seat belts on Horizon school buses could become a reality in years to come.

The discussion has been ongoing for the last three weeks as the school division waits for a review on child restraint regulations from Transport Canada in the fall of 2020. Horizon School Division is making preparations to be one of the first school divisions to have seatbelts installed on their school buses.

To buy new buses with seat belts for the division it would cost $120,000, which is $10,000 more than a regular school bus. The other option is to install new seats into the current buses owned by the Horizon School Division, which would cost around $20,000 per bus. With 125 buses within the Horizon School Division's possession, either they will be replaced or fixed to meet the safety requirements for all passengers on the bus.

The school division is unsure if or when seat belts will be implemented on school buses as planning is still in the works.
