A Humboldt school is raising funds for a new playground in an interesting way.

St. Augustine School, with the help of Ducks Unlimited and Jay-Dee Agtech, is growing canola in a donated field in hopes to raise enough money to replace the existing play structure.

Principal Cal Theisen explains why there is a need for the new play ground.

"Playground equipment is just so expensive. Our existing playground is near the end of its useful life, so you're looking at a minimum of $100,000 to purchase playground equipment and have it installed."

Theisen says the growing process couldn't be complete without the help of Dennis Zwarych driving the tractor.

"In terms of after we're done seeding here, I believe Dennis said that they would be willing to help with the spraying, and swathing and combining. So he's going to be donating some more of his time and equipment so we appreciate that. And hopefully we're going to have some good weather."

Theisen says how much money they hope to raise.

"Realistically we might be looking at anywhere from 25 to 40 thousand dollars. We've got about 90 or 100 acres that'll be seeded so that'll be a big help for us."
