Beginning Tuesday, Statistics Canada will be in Humboldt conducting the Canadian Health Measures Survey.

Five hundred people have been randomly selected to participate in the survey.

Anne Lostracco with Statistics Canada tells us more about the survey.

"Canadian Health Measures Survey is an ongoing survey developed by Statistics Canada, who partners with Health Canada and the public health agency of Canada. It's been collecting information on the Health of Canadians since 2007, and currently we are in cycle 5 of the survey. Humboldt has been selected to participate."

It is a two part survey that begins with in home interview questions about nutrition, alcohol and tobacco consumption and more.

The second phase, according to Lostracco, is a mobile clinic.

"At the clinic, trained health measure specialists take physical measures including height, weight, and blood pressure. Participants will also be asked to participate in a number of fitness tests and vision tests. We'll also ask for blood samples, urine samples, saliva and hair samples."

Lostracco tells us why they hold the survey.

"It's important to gather this health information that we can, to get it directly from respondents, and to help create a National baseline to measure the extent of major health problems such as diabetes, obesity, hypertension."

Those selected will have received a letter in the mail. Participation in the survey is voluntary.
