You have seen it on TV, and now you will have the opportunity to see it live.

Strongman Saskatchewan is bringing a competition to the Summer Sizzler, marking the first time that Humboldt will see an event.

Brad Provick, the Saskatchewan Director for Canadian Strongman, says that it is more day-to-day based than simply hitting the gym.

"It's an alternative to weightlifting," he said. "It's a type of weightlifting where some of the implements are odd-shaped and they sort of simulate real life work. Events you'll see sort of simulate things you do in real life and less about lifting a bar."

Among the events that take place will be the overhead press with a steel log, deadlift, lifting concrete balls, and the Farmer's Walk.

"You pick up a cylinder on each side - sort of like two suitcases - then carry them for 200 feet. 100 feet going there and coming back," said Provick about the walk. "The weights range from about 220 for the lightest guys, up to 265 for the heaviest guys, and that's per hand."

Saturday's competition is an important one for the competitors, as it is a provincial qualifier.

A total of 21 participants will take part in the competition, ranging from the middleweights up to the super-heavyweights.

Provick says that like most sports, the athletes fuel off of crowd interaction.

"Traditionally when we do a strongman show in a town, they really seem to latch on to it more than maybe the city people do," he said. "We're really excited to come to Humboldt and put on a really good show and just show the people how exciting it can be."

The competition will take place on 5th Avenue, south of the Uniplex, beginning at 1:00pm.
