The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is spreading the word about how fast the Saskatchewan debt is climbing.

The organization has a traveling debt clock that keeps count of how much the provincial red ink is growing, at this point that is $2.7 million.

Prairie Director Todd MacKay says they are touring the province to make people aware of the shocking numbers.

"It's hard to imagine $2.7 million so that's why we bring the clock out," he said Thursday morning in front of City Hall. "So that people can see those numbers flying by, it helps them understand that. Look, this isn't government money, this isn't some imaginary number, this is our money and we're the ones that are going to have to pay it back."

At it stands now, the provincial debt is over $5.3 billion, that's over $4,700 per person in Saskatchewan.

MacKay said they travel across every province, but only when there is red ink which hasn't been for quite some time here.

"It hasn't been in Saskatchewan for a very, very long time and there is a good reason for that, the debt has been going down for a really long time. I will be right honest with you, as much as I enjoy driving around Saskatchewan I hope the debt clock never comes back to Saskatchewan. I hope this is the last time we are going into debt."

MacKay says the province's recent borrowing of $700 million will amount to at least $14 million of interest charges per year. He says it's very hard for government's that borrow money to get away from that, Manitoba started borrowing in 2009 which was supposed to be temporary, they are still doing that today.

MacKay doesn't envy the government, nor is the CTF out to ridicule the work our MLA's and Premier Brad Wall are doing.

"There is no easy answer here, I don't mean to demean the government at all, they have to make not one or two tough decisions they probably need to make about 1,000 tough decisions. When you and I have to trim back our budgets by a few percent you have to make priorities, you have to make some tough decisions."

It's been almost 20 years since the clock visited Saskatchewan, the tour will wrap on Friday in Rosetown, Kindersley and the Battlefords.
