A Regina judge has dismissed Blaine Thomas Taypotat's appeal.

Taypotat was convicted of impaired driving and manslaughter in the death of Watson conservation officer Justin Knackstedt.

The 23 year-old officer was assisting the RCMP with traffic at an accident scene on Highway 11 south of Saskatoon in 2013 when a drunk Taypotat struck the man killing him.

He looked to use his troubled upbringing as an appeal tactic but the judge dismissed it on Thursday.

He was sentenced to nine and half years behind bars, his lawyer was looking for a sentence in the area of eight years.
