The town of Wadena was electric Friday night as an evening with Theo Fleury took place.

At the event, Stanley Cup champion, Olympic Gold medallist and best selling author Theo Fleury did a presentation.

Fleury talked about his experiences on his tour.

"When I started out on this journey, I had no idea that it would end up like this, or turn out like this because for many, many years I thought I was the only person in the world that was going through what I was going through. Telling my story, it's just been a landslide of other people seeking me out on social media, or email, or at an event, or whatever it is, them coming up and telling me their story."

Fleury, a 7 time NHL all-star, was sexually assaulted in his Junior hockey days, and then turned to a life of alcohol and drug addiction during his NHL career.

He describes his story and why he believes he did what he did.

"It's funny because the brain can't tell which is physical, and which is emotional pain. That was my experience, I think the biggest reason why I drank and did the drugs that I did was because I needed something on a daily basis to supress this pain that I was feeling."

Fleury explains a turning point in his life that allowed him to make the change.

"With any addiction you come to a point where you say 'am I going to keep doing this, and die, or am I going to change and try to get better?" Fortunately enough for me I was able to make that choice and like I said I had lots of people that were there and willing to help. That was probably the biggest catalyst in me changing my life."

Funds raised from the event are going towards the McClymont Lions Sports Grounds Ball Diamonds.
