LeRoy's Wendy Toye is the lone "builder" going into the Humboldt and District Sports Hall of Fame this summer.

A talented athlete across many sports it was figure skating that was her first love.

She admitted this week that the nomination was a shock, but a pleasant surprise.

"I was shocked," she said Wednesday afternoon at Main Street business, Haus of Stitches in Humboldt. "You never do volunteer things to be recognized so I was surprised."

First getting onto skates at the age of seven in LeRoy, Toye went on to judge skating across the province, she was also recognized by Skate Canada in 1999 for 25 years of being an official.

"When they came out with an amateur skating program in the 1960's, I took that, I coached in my club and around. When i was 15 my mom said, here's an exam, you should write this and then come out and trial judge and start judging."

In the early 1990's she received coaching honours from both the Saskatchewan Figure Skating Association as well as a nominee for a Canadian Figure Skating Award of Excellence for her volunteer coaching. She is still active in the sport when called upon.

"I just think figure skating is a really great sport to teach people how to work on their own, how to concentrate, how win and lose, how to pass and fail, it has good values for everybody."

Toye was also active in basketball, volleyball and track and field but her longevity spans figure skating for half a century.

The induction dinner will take place June 24th. Tickets will be available at a later date.
