Wildlife trappers and visitors from across the province convened for seminars, demonstrations, and fellowship Friday and Saturday.

The Saskatchewan Trappers Association (STA) held their 49th annual convention and general meeting at the Uniplex in Humboldt.

The focus of the association is on humane and ethical trapping methods and procedures, which are strictly enforced and regulated in Canada. Trapping wildlife for fur has been practiced in Canada for over 300 years, says Media Relations Coordinator for the STA, Ryan Demchynski.

When it comes to wild fur, Canada is the top producer and Saskatchewan top producer in Canada, he explains.

"Canada has the highest trapping standards on the planet, says Demchynski. He says by law, every trapper in Canada must use a certified trap that has gone through rigorous (independent) testing to ensure humane trapping is performed.

Beyond their enjoyment of the solitude and wilderness when trapping, Demchynski says there is pride in knowing that the practice helps control and regulate animal populations and allows them to flourish and remain healthy.

"Not a single species that we trap is endangered; is threatened. It's sustainable. We only take the allowable amount every year," explains Demchynski.

The convention grows larger each year, as does the interest in trapping, and Demchynski says over 300 people are expected to attend this year.
