The trail system in Watrous will have more vegetation, thanks to a local initiative.

In celebrating National Tree Day on Tuesday, the local Rotary Club teamed up with Green Acres Greenhouse, the Town of Watrous, and Watrous Home Hardware to plant new trees in the community.

"We had a number of volunteers from the Rotary Club here in Watrous, as well as Home Hardware," explained Rotary Club Member Al Mosewich. "They planted trees along the second phase of the Rotary Trail."

Mosewich estimates they had around 30 volunteers helping to plant 110 trees along the trail.

Each year, Tree Canada helps colour communities green on National Tree Day, with nearly 25,000 trees having been planted in the last 25 years.

"Funding for the project came from Tree Canada, and Ken Bushman from Home Hardware applied for a grant through their home office," noted Mosewich.

"The planting of the trees has been planned for a quite a long period of time over the summer," he added. "We consulted with a certified arborist by the name of Kelvin Kelly. He's been the one who designed the landscape plan for putting in the trees and shrubs along this section of the trail."

Mosewich says the trees will help the environment, and also bring some shelter from wind for those using the trail.

Among the trees planted were poplars, maples, oaks, saskatoons, lilacs, high bush cranberries and chokecherry or haskaps.

Mosewich says that they plan to do the same thing next year to help add more detail to the trails.
