Visitors to Red Deer Nursing Home In Porcupine Plain are being restricted until further notice due to a respiratory outbreak.

Those visiting extremely ill residents are excepted, the Saskatchewan Health Authority said in a news release.

Symptoms associated with respiratory illness were first reported on Monday, January 29th and included fever, chills, cough and fatigue. Ten residents are on respiratory precautions.

"Though there have not been many influenza cases in the region, other viruses are also circulating in communities. People may carry the virus without being symptomatic and can transfer it to others,” Saskatchewan Health Authority medical health officer Dr. Mohammad Khan said in the release.

“Proper hand washing with warm water and soap for at least 24 to 30 seconds is one of the most effective means of preventing the spread of communicable diseases.”

Individuals should check with the facility if they have any questions or concerns, the health authority says.
