The community of Wakaw is exploring the project of installing memorial benches around their town.

Over the winter, resident Dale Redl approached council with the idea which according to Community Developer Erin Standish, they have taken the ball and run with it.

"Immediately council and staff were so receptive to the idea. The only thing we needed to look at initially was sort of what we would like for a design and how it would work and make sure we had a plan to move forward before we went public and started taking applications."

Standish says that's in it's final stages and they all but officially nailed down a design. She adds that there is a number of areas in their town that would benefit from this project.

"We have a pretty active community and there is a lot of people walking the streets at any given time of the day and part of the goal of implementing this program is to place the benches strategically through out town so people can have a nice spot to sit and have a break as well as the families that commit to the program can have an option as to where might be the best place to recognize their family member."

Standish says for now they will start on town owned property, perhaps private locations may be looked at if that arises.

They are currently working on an application process for families interested in having a bench commemorate a family member who has since passed, if you need more information contact Standish at 233-4223 or email standish.wakaw@sasktel.net
