Residents of Humboldt will have to refrain from using their water systems for a short period of time beginning the week of July 17.

The City of Humboldt is starting their watermain flushing program that will help clean out the watermain pipes.

Jennifer Brooks, the city's outgoing Communications Director, says that residents will be notified well in advance to flushing in their area.

"Residents will receive a blue door hanger notification indicating when the watermain flushing will take place in your neighbourhood. Flushing will take place throughout a week and during that time, we ask residents to try not to turn on your taps or flush your toilets. This could draw some of the sediment into your pipes and we don't want that to happen."

Brooks also provided a glimpse into how the program operates.

"The fast moving water that flows through the watermains helps scour the lines, and cleans out a lot of the deposit and the sediment that builds up in the pipes over time and clears all that out to make sure that the pipe is clean and functions at the highest capacity possible."

The program aims to clean out the watermain pipes in the city, by having water run through the pipes before being discharged through fire hydrants.
