On Thursday, Horizon School Division students from Wakaw, Englefeld, Middle Lake and Watson all traveled to Strasbourg to compete in a regional science fair.

With that number of students there was many unique entrants with creative ideas but it was one grade 11 student from Watson that stole the show.

"She created algae herself and she processed it and ended up making oil from it," teacher Kal Lefebvre said of Teresa Deng's 'Algae Bio-Fuel' entry. "That oil that she made, she turned into a bio-fuel. It's the bio-fuel you can use in airplanes and cars," Lefebvre gloated Friday afternoon.

The idea came about for Deng when she was on Christmas holidays, excited to return to school and get researching the project now is the highlight of the event for everyone involved. It also earned her a trip to Montreal for the Canada-Wide Science Fair from May 15th to 20th.

"She gets a chance to show her work nationally," Lefebvre continued. "It's such a high level for a grade 11 student to take on themself that it impressed the judges and everyone there."

She will be attending the national event along with an Englefeld teacher and a board member of the Carlton Regional Science Fair.

Lefebvre added that Deng is going to be an amazing representative of not only Watson, but the province as a whole.

"Everyone is feeling a sense of pride and how excited we are that we know Teresa and she is taking Watson School and Horizon School Division and the Town of Watson and the province to a whole new level."

Fittingly enough, Friday was Bio-Diesel Day.
