Members of the Humboldt Wildlife Federation flocked to the organization's annual fish fry and awards banquet on Friday.

"It's our largest fundraiser of the year, which supports our initiatives around the community," said Vice President Scott Ewen.

The federation has recently helped bring the National Archery in Schools Program to Humboldt, which is now at Humboldt Public School as well as St. Dominic School.

Humboldt's NASP involvement will increase from April 13-14 when the provincial championships take place in the city.

Ewen says that funds also continue to go towards evolving their range set-up just south of the city.

"We're doing renovations out at our gun range, and we would like to touch up our archery range."

He added that their gun range required federal approval and sanctioning, which was quite a task to achieve.

"We'd like to go into phase two with that," Ewen said. "We have seven ranges approved, and we are working towards getting a single stall shooting shotgun range."

Friday's event featured three different fish dishes - pan-fried, deep-fried, and fish patties, which Ewen says is like a hamburger, but with fish.

"I believe only Humboldt has been doing (fish patties) for at least 30 years. The recipes have been honed down to basically delicious."

Part of the banquet also included handing out awards for fish, mule deer, whitetail deer, and moose, among others. Ewen says that there are separate categories for youth, adults, females, and males as well.

"We have some pretty good female hunters and anglers out in this country," he concluded.
