Wynyard town council on Tuesday passed its 2018 budget which includes $675,000 for a new landfill.

In 2015 the provincial environment ministry brought in new landfill regulations, CAO Jason Chorneyko told Bolt FM.

Last summer Wynyard closed its landfill and converted the site to a transfer station on orders from the province.

Now the town has received a permit to construct a new landfill, which will include a leachate collection pond and piezometers, Chorneyko said.

The budget also lays out $7 million this year and $3.5 million next year for a long-awaited arena.

To help pay for it, the town is planning a special tax on every household, likely around $250, Chorneyko said.

The mill rate will see little increase, if any, he said.
