The new Sarcan facility in Wynyard has more than twice as much space for customers and staff.

“Our customer base keeps expanding, we’re getting more volume, and we think in conjunction with the Town of Wynyard the recycle centre is important for us to grow with them,” said Carl Ens, general manager of capital improvements and special projects for Sarcan.

“So this new facility was really important so that we could serve the customers better in the whole Quill Lake area.”

The town celebrated the official grand opening of the $1.2 million, 3,300 square foot facility on Thursday. It began operating in January.

It’s equipped with a forklift, water at the counter for keeping everything clean, and is wheelchair accessible. It also has a drop-and-go room.

The town itself accepts household and commercial recycling depot on the other side of the centre.

The federal and provincial governments each contributed $383,343 under the New Building Canada Fund, with the town responsible for all remaining costs.

Government Relations Minister Warren Kaeding told Bolt FM the Wynyard Sarcan centre is one of many new infrastructure projects around the province that will be completed or announced in the next few months.

His department has received more than $1 billion worth of applications for infrastructure funding under the federal-provincial infrastructure grant.

Those would include wastewater and lagoon projects to recreational facilities and Sarcan buildings.

“To actually put a number on it, I couldn’t give you a number right now. It’s a lot. It is a lot. And virtually every community in the province has some kind of infrastructure need to it.”
