Saskatchewan's top family physician in 2016 is seen regularly in east-central Saskatchewan.

Wynyard's Crystal Litwin was recently given the honour of Physician of the Year by the Saskatchewan Medical Association. Something she says was quite a surprise to find out.

"I was absolutely shocked, as I don't feel I deserve it more than anyone else. I had no idea who would have nominated me, so it was a very pleasant surprise, and I was very humbled and honoured," Litwin stated. "It's been a wonderful experience. It is always nice to feel valued by your community and peers."

Three of Litwin's colleagues - Cheryl Brewster, Michael Jordan and Debra Koshinsky - turned out to be the ones who nominated her for the award, stating:

"Dr. Litwin has become the mainstay of our health-care team. Her exceptional standard of care is worthy for all of the medical and nursing community to emulate. Often working with few resources, both human and equipment, this overworked family doctor has continued to honour the Hippocratic Oath she took many years ago."

She was presented the honour on May 6 in Regina by Dr. Mark Brown, a past president of the medical association.

The Foam Lake born Litwin may not have forecasted a long stay in Wynyard 20 years ago, but she says it has been a rewarding, successful stay in the community.

"It is a wonderful place to live and raise a family. What started out as a six month stint after having a baby after I finished my residency turned out to be 20 years, and I have no sign of leaving," she said. "I really enjoy the people I work with. It's a friendly, peaceful, safe community, with enough activities to keep everyone busy."

Litwin went on to explain that being in the community for so long, and working directly with people you see every day has led to many strong bonds over 20 years.

"I think you build very close relationships, particularly when you're a rural family doctor, because you see your patients in the office, but you also see them on the street and at activities," she noted. "They know a lot about your personal life, and you know a lot about their lives, so that personal connection is what makes people feel that they're not just patients, but patients you care about."

The Physician of the Year award was first presented by the SMA in 2002, recognizing valuable contribution and service from Saskatchewan phyiscians.
