The Humboldt Broncos dropped their opening pair of games in the SJHL semi-finals against the Flin Flon Bombers.

The Broncos advanced to the second round of the SJHL playoffs after defeating the La Ronge Ice Wolves in 6 games. Meanwhile, the Bombers had similar success, taking care of the Battlefords North Stars in 6 games.

In game one, the Bombers special teams were the dictating factor in their ability to pull away with the victory.

Three powerplays in the first period led to goals from Reece Richmond  and Jaeden Mercier  for a 2-0 Bombers lead heading into the second period.

Over the remainder of the game, the Broncos were the more complete team and won the majority of the puck-possession battle. However, the difficulties of finding open opportunities in dangerous scoring areas were evident, being successfully limited by a large Bombers’ team.

The Broncos were able to cut the lead to one goal when Braiden Koran tipped home a point shot on the powerplay early in the third to make it 2-1, but were unable to beat goaltender Cal Schell from there on out.

Drew Kuzma capped the game with an empty net goal.

Shell stopped 36 of 27 shots faced for the Bombers. Rayce Ramsay turned aside 25 of 27 for the Broncos.

Game 2 on Saturday was a more tight knit affair with the teams exchanging singles in both the first and third periods.

In overtime, the Bombers Drew Kuzma put one home to solidify and two game lead heading back to Flin Flon. The Broncos outshot the Bombers 44-37. The series is on pause this week and will resume on Friday, April 8.
