The seven-game grind the Humboldt Broncos found themselves in during round one of the SJHL playoffs against the Weyburn Red Wings was a testament to both teams’ mettle. Now, with a day’s turnaround time, the Broncos are back down the road to face the rival Melfort Mustangs in Game 1 of the second round tonight, April 4.

“It was obviously a long series, and you get a lot of bumps and bruises over that time, but we’re proud of the guys,” says Broncos Head Coach Scott Barney. “We had guys in and out of the lineup, and your best players use your goalie and Ben Motew played great for us through all seven games.”

Goalies will also be an issue in this one. On paper in the playoffs, the teams are closely matched including the goal against averages for netminders Motew at 2.19 in the playoffs and Melfort’s James Venne at 2.61. Barney knows it’s all about the full team effort.

“It’s a familiar rivalry with the Mustangs, and the guys are excited to get going. We’ve had some success during the season against them, and obviously Melfort has had a successful season finishing second in the league.”

Home ice has proven a distinct advantage thus far in the playoffs, but Humboldt Broncos fans have never been shy of turning up at the Northern Lights Palace to give the Green and Gold an added boost.

“The fans have been great in their support all series, and game seven, it was just incredible. I’m sure a lot will be coming up to Melfort, and I know the team appreciates that. We can’t wait to get back to the EPA and get it rocking again.”

All away and home game times are 7:30 pm with the Broncos in Melfort tonight and tomorrow night and then back on home ice on Tuesday, April 9 and Wednesday, April 10.
